Vitamin D Deficiency in the Black Population

As a holistic doctor, I consider myself as a relatively healthy person. I eat better, exercise more, and am conscious about maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

I went to the doctor for my annual physical and my results were normal except for my vitamin D. To be more specific my vitamin D was at a dangerously low level. The picture below are my actual lab results for my vitamin D.

It isn’t a mystery that African Americans can’t absorb vitamin well due to our hyperpigmented skin complexions and social factors. Knowing this I was always cautious about making sure I get sun every day, but this wasn’t enough.

In fact, vitamin deficiency is a health concern that isn’t addressed in the media often and is undetected if you don’t get physicals. What more alarming is that there are studies to conclude vitamin D deficiency could a contributor to many of the comorbidities that African American suffer from:

  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Heart Disease
  • Cancer
  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • Autoimmune Diseases.

So, the natural solution would be to take vitamin D supplements to improve my numbers. I was prescribed vitamin D2 at 50,000 ul for three months. However, after doing research D2 was found to be less effective than D3 because it isn’t the naturally forming vitamin D, and in some studies have shown to create more of a problem than good.

Vitamin D3 can be found EVERYWHERE. You can purchase it from Walmart, Walgreens, or any grocery store, but this isn’t where I would get my vitamins because of the quality.

There have been many articles uncovering the secrets behind over the counter vitamins containing unlisted ingredients, fillers, or very little of what you actually thought. New York Attorney General accused four major retailers on Monday of selling fraudulent &/or dangerous herbal supplements and requested that they eliminate the products from the shelves.

Because of this, I only use my trusted brand of vitamin D, which provides the purest supplements humanly possible. They aren’t premixed dilutions of any “micro-dose” vitamins. Instead, we purchase pure, undiluted vitamins and create our own dilutions when it is necessary to do so, using pure, hypoallergenic powders, such as magnesium citrate or plant cellulose. And for less than $10 a bottle. It’s the best way to get the vitamin source that’s important for you.
