DIOP was founded in 2018 by Mapate Diop and Evan Fried around a simple idea: take the West African wax print Mapate grew up with in Senegal and make it into clothes people actually wear every day. The Detroit-based brand produces robes, button-down shirts, shorts, pajama and sleep sets, hoodies and windbreakers in bold patterns, alongside accessories like scarves, hats, scrunchies, sleep masks and even dog collars.
Prints are chosen for their meaning as well as their look, and the brand is open about crediting the cultural source rather than borrowing quietly. DIOP has been featured in national press and has built a loyal following through its online store, which ships nationwide.
