Founder Christina Funke Tegbe grew up in Austin, Texas, with a Nigerian father and an American mother. Shea butter that her aunt sent from Nigeria was part of her childhood. In 2015 she left her career as a healthcare consultant and spent a year in Ghana, Nigeria and Morocco learning about the ingredients and how they are traditionally used. She launched 54 Thrones in 2016.
The brand works with cooperatives and artisans across Africa. It sources shea butter from Ghana and Uganda, baobab oil from Nigeria, argan oil from Morocco, marula from South Africa, and jasmine and neroli from Egypt. Its signature Beauty Butters are rich all-over creams. The line also includes body oils, clay masks, mists and cleansing bars.
