Olowo-n'djo Tchala, who was born in Togo, founded Alaffia in 2003 with his wife, Prairie Rose Hyde, a former Peace Corps volunteer. They started it with student loans and their house as collateral. The goal was to fight poverty by paying fair prices for shea and other raw materials and putting the profits back into West African communities.
