Black Girls RUN! was founded in 2009 to tackle the health disparities affecting Black women by doing something direct about it: getting people out running together.
The New York chapter is one of dozens across the country, run by volunteer ambassadors who organize free group runs and walks around the city, training support for first-timers working toward a 5K and for veterans chasing marathon times. Nobody gets left behind is the operating principle, and the group is known for welcoming beginners, walkers and anyone who has been told running is not for them.
There are no membership fees and no facility — meetups are posted through the chapter's social channels and the national website, where you can also find training resources and the organization's gear. For Black women in New York looking for a fitness community that will actually show up for them week after week, this is where to start.
