BLK + GRN

BLK + GRN is an online marketplace founded in 2017 by Dr. Kristian Edwards, also published as Kristian Henderson, a public-health academic trained at Johns Hopkins. She started it in response to a 2017 Environmental Working Group study on the higher chemical exposure Black women face from everyday personal care products.

The site now stocks more than 136 all-Black artisan brands, each vetted by Black health experts for toxic-free ingredients, across skincare, hair care, body care, home care, supplements and aromatherapy. Alongside the shop the company publishes a Toxic Twenty ingredient guide, the BLK Garden Podcast, a wellness blog and community events, so shopping there comes with an education in what is actually in the bottle. The storefront carries more than 1,900 five-star customer reviews. BLK + GRN is Maryland-based and online-only with no storefront; the published address in Hyattsville is a suite and mailbox rather than a shop.
