Description

Eartha's Farm & Market is a 10.5-acre urban farm with an on-site market at 4850 Moncrief Road in Northwest Jacksonville.

The farm grows annual vegetables, herbs and fruit using organic, regenerative and sustainable practices, and the site has grown well past a few rows of crops: a bee apiary, a greenhouse, a Quonset hut, compost facilities, a perennial herb garden, a community garden and beds you can rent for your own growing.

It is an initiative of the Clara White Mission, the Jacksonville nonprofit founded in 1904 by Eartha M.M. White — humanitarian, entrepreneur and social activist, and a woman barely one generation removed from enslavement who built institutions that are still meeting needs today. The farm sits on land she once lived on and stewarded; her home and museum are still standing.

The work is pointed. The Moncrief Springs neighborhood is a historically Black community that the city used for decades as an incinerator ash dump, with health consequences that outlasted the cleanup. The farm's primary service areas are 32209, 32208 and 32206, and the goal is straightforward: more fresh food, better health outcomes, and training for people who live here.
