Frugal Bookstore is a family-run independent bookstore at 57 Warren Street in Roxbury, steps from Nubian Square. Its shelves center books by and about Black and Brown people, with fiction, nonfiction, history, self-help and a strong children's and young adult section, so families can find stories where their kids see themselves.
The store is owned by husband and wife Leonard Egerton and Clarrissa Cropper Egerton. They bought the business in 2008 from Bob Romanow, who had sold books inside his Frugal Furniture store, and they kept the Frugal name. The shop moved to its current Warren Street storefront in 2016.
Frugal Bookstore is known as Boston's only Black-owned bookstore and puts reading and literacy first. In 2024 the City of Boston named it a Legacy Business, a recognition for long-standing independent businesses. Neighbors and readers from around the country rallied behind the shop after a fire damaged the building, and it remains open to the community.
