Founder Abena Boamah-Acheampong, who is Ghanaian, grew up using shea butter and began making skincare for herself while teaching and finishing graduate school in Chicago, where cold winters left her skin dry. Friends and family encouraged her to turn it into a business, and she launched Hanahana Beauty in 2017.
The brand sources its shea butter from the Katariga Women's Shea Cooperative in Tamale, Ghana, and supports the women there through health care, education and economic programs. Hanahana's mission centers on women of color, both its customers and the women in its supply chain.
