House of Aama

Los Angeles, California, United States
Business Details

House of Aama is the Los Angeles design house founded in 2015 by mother-and-daughter team Rebecca Henry and Akua Shabaka. Their work explores the folkways of the Black American South and diaspora — Gullah Geechee culture, Black beach and bathing history, church and juke-joint dress — and turns that research into womenswear that is soft, romantic and historically grounded.

Collections run to dresses, jumpsuits, blouses, bottoms, outerwear and accessories, often in prints and textiles developed specifically for the story each season tells. The label has shown at New York Fashion Week, been covered widely in national press and is carried by major retailers alongside its own online shop.

There is no storefront; the website is where to browse and buy. For clothing that carries Black history as its design language — and a Black woman-owned family business behind it — House of Aama is one of the most thoughtful labels working today.
