Description

Oasis Fresh Market is a Black-owned grocery store at 1725 N Peoria Ave in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and it was built to answer a specific problem: North Tulsa had gone years without a full-service grocery store.

Inside you will find what a neighborhood store should have — produce, meat, seafood, deli, bakery, dairy, frozen foods, pantry staples, beer and wine, and a home and floral section. There is an online ordering option if you would rather shop from home, and business delivery for local offices. There is even a form on the site to request an item you want stocked, which tells you something about how the store thinks about its customers.

Oasis runs on a hybrid model: a for-profit grocery store paired with a nonprofit arm. Founder and owner Aaron Johnson set it up that way so the store could do more than sell food. Through Oasis Projects, the nonprofit side offers rent assistance, financial literacy classes, clinical care and workforce development, funded by grants and donors rather than grocery margins. The store also participates in the Double Up program, which stretches food dollars for shoppers who need it.

The name is the mission stated plainly: an oasis is a refuge, a safe
