The Art of Words Community School (TAWCS) is a Waldorf inspired school that integrates art and literature throughout its curriculum content. Art and Literature are its teaching tool, while Progressive, Social Justice, and Community Based Learning are included in its content. Additionally, the curriculum includes the subject matter content requirements as outlined in the New York State Common Core Learning Standards (NYSCCLS) in English, Math, Social Studies, and Science. The Art of Words Community School (TAWCS) infuses multiple elements of Progressive Education and its philosophy throughout the curriculum, both for the lower and upper grades. Teachers are required to develop an inquiry-based curriculum relative to their students’ social, physical, emotional, and cognitive stage of development. This translates into an experience-based curriculum that (1) is adapted to the developmental needs of the children in which they teach; (2) integrates critical inquiry using text and the process of critical analysis; (3) embodies the practices of a democratic community; and (4) makes connections to the larger community and the world.
