‘Law & Order’: Here’s How Mehcad Brooks’ Jalen Shaw Was Written Out In Season 25 Premiere

‘Law & Order’: Here’s How Mehcad Brooks’ Jalen Shaw Was Written Out In Season 25 Premiere

It’s been a few months since Mehcad Brooks’ departure from Law & Order was announced, and last week, fans learned what happened to his character, Det. Jalen Shaw, on the NBC police procedural.

Law & Order returned for its 25th season on Thursday, during which Shaw’s exit was revealed in a quick conversation that left the door open for Brooks to potentially return to the show.

Read on for more on Brooks’ departure and how it was addressed on the show.

Lt. Jessica Brady tells Det. Vincent Riley that Shaw took a position at another precinct

During Thursday’s premiere episode, in a brief conversation with Det. Vincent Riley (Reid Scott), Lt. Jessica Brady (Maura Tierney) said Shaw took a new position at the 88th Precinct of the New York Police Department,

“I just spoke to Shaw. Something opened up over at the 8-8, and he’s going to take it,” she said, as reported by Deadline.

Riley responded, “I knew he wanted to get back to Brooklyn. So good for him,” before adding, “I’m going to miss that guy, though.”

Brooks’ Shaw joined Law & Order for Season 22, replacing Anthony Anderson’s Det. Kevin Bernard, following the police procedural’s revival earlier that year.

Brooks’s departure from the series was a mutual decision

According to Deadline in July, Brooks’ departure from the show was mutual as the actor pursues other opportunities. Brooks appeared on Season 3 of HBO Max’s Sex and the City revival, And Just Like That. He’s also set to reprise his role as Jax in Mortal Kombat II, which premieres in 2026.

Who is Mehcad Books’ replacement on ‘Law & Order’?

This week, ahead of the premiere, it was announced that David Ajala would be the new detective in light of Brooks’ departure. No other details are known about his character.
